"12 Angry Men" by Reginald Rose (in English)
Juror #8: (after conducting an experiment to see if the old
man could have reached his door in 15 seconds) Here's what I think happened:
the old man heard the fight between the boy and his father a few hours earlier.
Then, when he's lying in his bed, he heard a body hit the floor in the boy's
apartment, heard the woman scream from across the street, got to his front door
as fast as he could, heard somebody racing down the stairs and *assumed* it was
the boy!
Juror #6: I think that's possible!
Juror #3: (from the other side of the room)
*"Assumed"?*
(Everyone looks at #3 as he chuckles)
Juror #3: Brother, I've seen all kinds of dishonesty in my
day, but this little display takes the cake. Y'all come in here with your
hearts bleedin' all over the floor about slum kids and injustice, you listen to
some fairy tales... Suddenly, you start gettin' through to some of these old
ladies. Well, you're not getting through to me, I've had enough. (starts shouting) What's the *matter* with you guys? You all *know*
he's guilty! He's *got* to burn! You're letting him slip through our fingers!
Juror #8: (brow furrowing) "Slip through our
fingers"? Are you his executioner?
Juror #3: I'm one of 'em!
Juror #8: ...Perhaps you'd like to pull the switch?
Juror #8: (baiting him) I feel sorry for you. What it must
feel like to want to pull the switch! Ever since you walked into this room,
you've been acting like a self-appointed public avenger. You want to see this
boy die because you *personally* want it, not because of the facts! You're a
sadist!
(#3 lunges wildly at #8, who holds his ground. Several
jurors hold #3 back)
Juror #3: I'll kill him! I'll - *kill him!*
Juror #8: (calmly) You don't *really* mean you'll kill me,
do you?

"A Winter Sunset" by Lord Alfred Douglas (in English)
The frosty sky, like a furnace burning,
The keen air, crisp and cold,
And a sunset that splashes the clouds with gold
But my heart to summer turning.
Come back, sweet summer ! come back again !
I hate the snow,
And the icy winds that the north lands blow,
And the fall of the frozen rain.
I hate the iron ground,
And the Christmas roses,
And the sickly day that dies when it closes,
With never a song or a sound.
Come back ! come back ! with your passionate heat
And glowing hazes,
And your sun that shines as a lover gazes,
And your day with the tired feet.

"Ya Toda me Entregué y Dí" by St, Therese of Avila (in Spanish)
Ya toda me
entregué y dí,
y de tal suerte
he trocado,
que mi Amado es
para mí
y yo soy para mi
Amado.
Cuando el dulce
Cazador
me tiró y dejó
herida,
en los brazos del
amor
mi alma quedó
rendida;
y, cobrando nueva
vida,
de tal manera he
trocado,
que mi Amado es
para mí
y yo soy para mi
Amado.
Hirióme con una
flecha
enherbolada de
amor,
y mi alma quedó
hecha
una con su
Criador;
Ya yo no quiero
otro amor,
pues a mi Dios me
he entregado,
y mi Amado es
para mí
y yo soy para mi
Amado.

Sonnet IV by William Shakespeare (in English)
Unthrifty loveliness, why dost thou spend
Upon thy self thy beauty's legacy?
Nature's bequest gives nothing, but doth lend,
And being frank she lends to those are free:
Then, beauteous niggard, why dost thou abuse
The bounteous largess given thee to give?
Profitless usurer, why dost thou use
So great a sum of sums, yet canst not live?
For having traffic with thy self alone,
Thou of thy self thy sweet self dost deceive:
Then how when nature calls thee to be gone,
What acceptable audit canst thou leave?
Thy unused beauty
must be tombed with thee,
Which, used, lives
th' executor to be.

"Banzo" by Raimundo Correia (in Portuguese)
Visões que na
alma o céu do exílio incuba,
Mortais visões! Fuzila
o azul infando...
Coleia, basilisco
de ouro, ondeando
O Níger... Bramem
leões de fulva juba...
Uivam chacais...
Ressoa a fera tuba
Dos cafres, pelas
grotas retumbando,
E a estrelada das
árvores, que um bando
De paquidermes
colossais derruba...
Como o guaraz nas
rubras penhas dorme,
Dorme em nimbos
de sangue o sol oculto...
Fuma o saibro
africano incandescente...
Vai com a sombra
crescendo o vulto enorme
Do baobá... E
cresce na alma o vulto
De uma tristeza,
imensa, imensamente...

The Birth of Jesus According to St. Luke (in English)
Chapter II
1. And it came to pass in those days,
that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be
taxed. 2. ([And] this taxing was first made when
Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3. And all went to be taxed, every one into his
own city. 4. And Joseph also went up from
Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David,
which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5. To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being
great with child. 6. And so it was, that, while
they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and
wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was
no room for them in the inn. 8. And there were
in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their
flock by night. 9. And, lo, the angel of the
Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they
were sore afraid. 10. And the angel said unto
them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall
be to all people. 11. For unto you is born this
day in the city of David
a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12. And
this [shall be] a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling
clothes, lying in a manger. 13. And suddenly
there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and
saying,
14. Glory to
God in the highest,
and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15. And it came to pass, as the
angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another,
Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass,
which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16. And
they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a
manger. 17. And when they had seen [it], they
made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18. And all they that heard [it] wondered at those
things which were told them by the shepherds. 19.
But Mary kept all these things, and pondered [them] in her heart. 20. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and
praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told
unto them.

The Birth of Jesus According to St. Matthew (in English)
1. The book of the generation of
Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
2. Abraham begat Isaac;
and Isaac begat Jacob;
and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;
3. And Judas begat Phares and
Zara of Thamar;
and Phares begat Esrom;
and Esrom begat Aram;
4. And Aram begat Aminadab;
and Aminadab begat Naasson;
and Naasson begat Salmon;
5. And Salmon begat Booz of
Rachab;
and Booz begat Obed of Ruth;
and Obed begat Jesse;
6. And Jesse begat David the
king;
and David the king begat Solomon of her
[that had been the wife] of Urias;
7. And Solomon begat Roboam;
and Roboam begat Abia;
and Abia begat Asa;
8. And Asa begat Josaphat;
and Josaphat begat Joram;
and Joram begat Ozias;
9. And Ozias begat Joatham;
and Joatham begat Achaz;
and Achaz begat Ezekias;
10. And Ezekias begat Manasses;
and Manasses begat Amon;
and Amon begat Josias;
11. And Josias begat Jechonias
and his brethren,
about the time they were carried away to Babylon:
12. And after they were brought
to Babylon,
Jechonias begat Salathiel;
and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;
13. And Zorobabel begat Abiud;
and Abiud begat Eliakim;
and Eliakim begat Azor;
14. And Azor begat Sadoc;
and Sadoc begat Achim;
and Achim begat Eliud;
15. And Eliud begat Eleazar;
and Eleazar begat Matthan;
and Matthan begat Jacob;
16. And Jacob begat Joseph the
husband of Mary,
of whom was born Jesus, who is called
Christ.
17. So all the generations from Abraham to David [are] fourteen
generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon
[are] fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ [are] fourteen
generations. 18. Now the birth of
Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph,
before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19. Then
Joseph her husband, being a just [man], and not willing to make her a publick
example, was minded to put her away privily. 20. But while he thought on these
things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying,
Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that
which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21. And she shall bring forth a
son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from
their sins. 22. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was
spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23. Behold, a virgin shall be
with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel,
which being interpreted is, God with us.
24. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had
bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25. And knew her not till she had
brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
